Aran Shetterly presents MORNINGSIDE: the 1979 Greensboro Massacre and the Struggle for an American City’s Soul, with John L. S. Simpkins at Flyleaf Books

An unflinching look at the all but forgotten though no less shocking 1979 racial tragedy that divided Greensboro, N.C., and the nation, and the grassroots activists who, in their tireless fight for justice, refused to give up on America’s promised ideals.

Aran Shetterly is a writer, editor, and narrative historian. He is the author of the critically acclaimed The Americano: Fighting with Castro for Cuba’s Freedom, the founder of the Mexico City-based magazine, Inside Mexico, and a member of the board of the Americans Who Tell the Truth organization. He has received numerous fellowships, including the Virginia Humanities Fellowship and the 2019 National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. Aran holds a BA in literature from Harvard College, and an MA in American Studies. He currently he lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, with his son and wife, the New York Times bestselling author Margot Lee Shetterly.

John L.S. Simpkins, President and CEO at MDC, works with the entire team to set strategy, shape MDC’s portfolio of work, and engage with partners and the public around the urgent challenge of eliminating disparities to build a South where all people can thrive. Before joining MDC in 2020, John held various leadership roles in efforts to promote equity, access, and inclusion at the state, national, and international levels. A constitutional scholar and practicing attorney, John served in the Obama Administration as deputy general counsel for the White House Office of Management and Budget and general counsel for the U.S. Agency for International Development. He is a Senior Lecturer at Duke Law School and a member of the Liberty Fellowship, a program in the Aspen Global Leadership Network dedicated to moving South Carolina forward.
