Mur Lafferty presents CHAOS TERMINAL (The Midsolar Murders #2) at Flyleaf Books
Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NCMallory Viridian would rather not be an amateur detective, and fled to outer space to avoid it…but when one of the new human arrivals on a space shuttle is murdered, she’s back in the game. Mallory Viridian would rather not be an amateur detective, thank you very much. But no matter what she does, people persist in dying around her—and only she seems to be able to solve the crime. After fleeing to an alien space station in hopes that the lack of humans would stop the murders, a serial killer had the nerve to follow her to Station Eternity. (Mallory deduced who the true culprit was that time, too.) Now the law enforcement agent who hounded Mallory on Earth has come to Station Eternity, along with her teenage crush and his sister, Mallory’s best friend from high school. Mallory doesn’t believe in coincidences, and so she’s not at all surprised when someone in the latest shuttle from Earth is murdered. It’s the story of her life, after all. Only this time she has more than a killer to deal with. Between her fugitive friends, a new threat arising from the Sundry hivemind, and the alarmingly peculiar behavior of the sentient space station they all call home, even Mallory’s deductive abilities are strained. If she can’t find out what’s going on (and fast), a disaster of intergalactic proportions may occur.... Mur Lafferty is an author, podcaster, and editor. She has been nominated for many awards, and even won a few. She lives in Durham, NC with her family.

Walt Hickey presents YOU ARE WHAT YOU WATCH: How Movies and TV Affect Everything, with Alice Wilder at Flyleaf Books
Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NCPulitzer Prize-winning author and data expert Walt Hickey explains the power of entertainment to change our biology, our beliefs, how we see ourselves, and how nations gain power. Virtually anyone who has ever watched a profound movie, a powerful TV show, or read a moving novel understands that entertainment can and does affect us in surprising and significant ways. But did you know that our most popular forms of entertainment can have a direct physical effect on us, a measurable impact on society, geopolitics, the economy, and even the future itself? In You Are What You Watch, Walter Hickey, Pulitzer Prize winner and former chief culture writer at acclaimed data site FiveThirtyEight.com, proves how exactly how what we watch (and read and listen to) has a far greater effect on us and the world at large than we imagine. Employing a mix of research, deep reporting, and 100 data visualizations, Hickey presents the true power of entertainment and culture. From the decrease in shark populations after Jaws to the increase in women and girls taking up archery following The Hunger Games, You Are What You Watch proves its points not just with research and argument, but hard data. Did you know, for example, that crime statistics prove that violent movies actually lead to less real-world violence? And that the international rise of anime and Manga helped lift the Japanese economy out of the doldrums in the 1980s? Or that British and American intelligence agencies actually got ideas from the James Bond movies? In You Are What You Watch, readers will be given a nerdy, and sobering, celebration of popular entertainment and its surprising power to change the world. Walt Hickey is Insider’s senior editor for data. Formerly, he was chief culture writer at FiveThirtyEight. He also writes Numlock News, a […]

Janet Hurley presents: GLOVE SHY: A SISTER’S RECKONING, with Bland Simpson at Flyleaf Books
Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NCThe heartbeat of family life is the thump of fists on a heavy bag. In the 1970s, Janet Hurley's older brother, Brian, was the teenage protégé of a World Heavyweight Champion who lived in their hometown. Brian was a young man of brilliance and wit. His talents were broad, yet boxing was the path he chose. And, soon enough, family life revolved around his training, his bouts, his future: Olympic medals? A pro career? Glove Shy is a tender-tough memoir, a loving look at how a sport as elemental as boxing can obscure the powerful forces this family never saw coming. But, when one of your own is in the ring, slugging, being slugged, what else can matter? Janet Hurley was born and raised in the Hudson Valley of upstate New York before coming south to Carolina for its undergraduate creative writing program. She has lived in the south ever since publishing feature stories and profiles for NC-based magazines, Our State and VERVE and, most recently, in the Bitter Southerner. In 2008, she started a small business, True Ink, providing creative opportunities for young writers. This led to co-founding Asheville Writers in the Schools and Community (AWITSC), a non-profit committed to racial equity and social change through the power of arts, culture and restorative self-expression. Janet currently lives in Asheville where she and her husband, David raised their two children, Maren and Liam, and now live with their dog, Wilson. Bland Simpson is the Kenan Distinguished Professor in English and Creative Writing at UNC Chapel Hill and longtime pianist and composer-lyricist in The Red Clay Ramblers, the acclaimed Tony Award-winning North Carolina string band, which celebrated its 50th anniversary Fall 2022. He has published ten books, all but one about North Carolina, focusing on the state’s eastern sound country and […]
