Offsite Event: Lamar Giles presents THE GETAWAY at the Chapel Hill Public Library, Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

Jay is living his best life at Karloff Country, one of the world’s most famous resorts. He’s got his family, his crew, and an incredible after-school job at the property’s main theme park. Life isn’t so great for the rest of the world, but when people come here to vacation, it’s to get away from all that. As things outside get worse, trouble starts seeping into Karloff. First, Jay’s friend Connie and her family disappear in the middle of the night and no one will talk about it. Then the richest and most powerful families start arriving, only... they aren’t leaving. Unknown to the employees, the resort has been selling shares in an end-of-the-world oasis. The best of the best at the end of days. And in order to deliver the top-notch customer service the wealthy clientele paid for, the employees will be at their total beck and call. Whether they like it or not. Yet Karloff Country didn’t count on Jay and his crew--and just how far they’ll go to find out the truth and save themselves. But what’s more dangerous: the monster you know in your home or the unknown nightmare outside the walls? Lamar Giles writes for teens and adults across multiple genres, with work appearing on numerous Best Of lists each and every year. He is the author of the acclaimed novels Fake ID, Endangered, Overturned, Spin, The Last Last-Day-of-Summer, Not So Pure and Simple, and The Last Mirror on the Left as well as numerous pieces of short fiction. He is a founding member of We Need Diverse Books and resides in Virginia with his wife.

Mike Duncan presents HERO OF TWO WORLDS with Lloyd Kramer at Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

Few in history can match the revolutionary career of the Marquis de Lafayette. Over fifty incredible years at the heart of the Age of Revolution, he fought courageously on both sides of the Atlantic. He was a soldier, statesman, idealist, philanthropist, and abolitionist. As a teenager, Lafayette ran away from France to join the American Revolution. Returning home a national hero, he helped launch the French Revolution, eventually spending five years locked in dungeon prisons. After his release, Lafayette sparred with Napoleon, joined an underground conspiracy to overthrow King Louis XVIII, and became an international symbol of liberty. Finally, as a revered elder statesman, he was instrumental in the overthrow of the Bourbon Dynasty in the Revolution of 1830. From enthusiastic youth to world-weary old age, from the pinnacle of glory to the depths of despair, Lafayette never stopped fighting for the rights of all mankind. His remarkable life is the story of where we come from, and an inspiration to defend the ideals he held dear. Mike Duncan is one of the most popular history podcasters in the world and author of the New York Times–bestselling books The Storm Before the Storm: The Beginning of the End of the Roman Republic and Hero of Two Worlds: The Marquis de Lafayette in the Age of Revolution. His award-winning series, The History of Rome, remains a legendary landmark in the history of podcasting. Duncan’s ongoing series, Revolutions, explores the great political revolutions that have driven the course of modern history. Lloyd Kramer is is a Professor of History and Director of Carolina Public Humanities (CPH) at UNC, Chapel Hill. He received his PhD at Cornell University and served previously as Chair of the UNC-CH History Department. His research and teaching focus on European history, with particular attention to modern France and […]

Sullivan offers an essential, easy-to-use resource for adapting to the new realities of climate change. This book will empower southerners to grow beautiful gardens while using gardening practices that contribute to solutions for our shared environment. Barbara J. Sullivan, author of Garden Perennials for the Coastal South, lives and gardens in Wilmington, North Carolina. Rochelle Hurt and Leslie Wheeler present THE J GIRLS: A REALITY SHOW & POETRY’S POSSIBLE WORLDS and THE STATE SHE’S IN at Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

Jocelyn, Jodie, Jennifer, Jacqui, Joelle. Ignoring the optimistic advice of elders, these five working-class teens in the Rust Belt band together in their embrace of bad behavior and poor taste as they navigate sexuality and identity with loud-mouthed joy and clear-eyed cynicism. Winner of the 2021 Blue Light Books Prize, Rochelle Hurt's The J Girls: A Reality Show is a tribute to the grit and glitter of millennial girlhood and a testament to its dangers and traumas. Hurt's creative, genre-bending mix of poetry, fiction, and screenplay brings the girls to life with campy performances of monologues, soap opera clips, mock interviews, talk shows, commercials, and even burlesque. Vulgar, rhapsodic language serves as costume and shield, allowing the J Girls to script their own images and project glowing, outsized versions of themselves into the safe space of the TV screen. Playful and poignant, The J Girls is a flashy ode to performance and a nostalgic elegy for adolescent friendships. Rochelle Hurt is a poet and essayist. Her other books include In Which I Play the Runaway, which won the Barrow Street Book Prize, and The Rusted City: A Novel in Poems. Her work has been included in Poetry magazine and the Best New Poets anthology series, and she's been awarded prizes and fellowships from Poetry International, Arts & Letters, Vermont Studio Center, Jentel, and Yaddo. Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, she now lives in Orlando and teaches in the MFA program at the University of Central Florida. Leslie Wheeler is the author of the Poetry’s Possible Worlds, a memoir exploring the restorative power of poetry during a time of crisis. Her other books include the novel Unbecoming and five books of poetry, most recently The State She’s In. Her poems and essays appear in such journals as Poetry, Poets & Writers, American […]

KIDS STORYTIME: Sue Soltis presents NOTHING LIKE A PUFFIN and THE STARS JUST UP THE STREET at Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

Nothing Like A Puffin celebrates the puffin, a truly amazing creature, which is completely unique and one-of-a kind. A ladder is nothing like a puffin. A house is nothing like a puffin. A newspaper is nothing like a puffin. . . . But wait! Who would have guessed? Could these things be more alike than you think? Young children will love following this mischievous puffin in an entertaining exercise in creative classification— and are guaranteed to start looking at everyday things in a whole new way. In The Stars Just Up the Street, illustrated by Christine Davenier, a grandpa’s memories of brilliant night skies inspire a little girl to take action in a tale for budding community organizers and star lovers alike. Sue's forthcoming picture book The Moon Moved In, illustrated by Sonia Sánchez (illustrator of the award-winning Evelyn Del Rey is Moving Away, written by Meg Medina), will be published by Chronicle Books in 2023. Sue Soltis is the author of the picture books Nothing Like a Puffin, illustrated by Bob Kolar, and The Stars Just Up the Street, illustrated by Christine Davenier (both from Candlewick Press). Ever since she started writing poems in a Snoopy notebook at age 12, she’s been hooked on writing! She lives with her family in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she’s trying to help all the little invertebrates in the yard by planting native plants, hosting mason bees, and composting—a subject found in her next picture book The Moon Moved In (forthcoming, 2023, Chronicle Books, illustrated by Sonia Sánchez)
