American Revolution Tour of NC and Annual Member Meeting

Historic Chatham County Courthouse 9 Hillsboro St., Pittsboro, NC, United States

The “American Revolution Tour of North Carolina™” is a free online guide exploring more than 90 sites related to the Revolution and Regulators. AmRevNC.com covers not only battles, but stories of protests, personal heroism, women, minorities, and more. Background pages summarize the history of the war, biographies, and military life. Research for the website turned up events and details either forgotten, even by historical organizations, or not widely known. AmRevNC's founder and author will point out how to get the most value from the website, and then share stories about the project and locations in our region, with an emphasis on Chatham County people and events. Audience questions will guide the rest of the conversation. And: Biography Jim Morgan is a former professional writer with a master’s degree from the oldest journalism school in the world, at the University of Missouri–Columbia. After a brief time in newspapers, he did university and business writing for many years before shifting to project management and business coaching. He has taught team leadership or assisted teams at a wide variety of organizations, including Los Alamos National Laboratory, Microsoft, and Red Hat. He has also written and presented extensively about management techniques based on scientific research, and runs a coaching practice called Full Scale agile™. Due to COVID lock-downs, Jim turned what was a hobby project into a business startup, assisted by three consultants, to create AmRevNC. He lives in Durham with a pet ferret, sails, and has black belts in two martial arts.

Kianna Alexander presents CAROLINA BUILT at Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

A vivid and moving novel based on the incredible life of real estate magnate Josephine N. Leary—a previously untold story of passion, perseverance, and building a legacy after emancipation in North Carolina. Josephine N. Leary is determined to build a life of her own and a future for her family. When she moves to Edenton, North Carolina from the plantation where she was born, she is free, newly married, and ready to follow her dreams. As the demands of life pull Josephine’s attention—deepening her marriage, mothering her daughters, supporting her grandmother—she struggles to balance her real estate aspirations with the realities of keeping life going every day. She teaches herself to be a businesswoman, to manage her finances, and to make smart investments in the local real estate market. But with each passing year, it grows more and more difficult to focus on building her legacy from the ground up. Moving and inspiring, Josephine Leary’s untold story speaks to the part of us that dares to dream bigger, tear down whatever stands in our way and build something better for the loved ones we leave behind.

Brendan Slocumb presents THE VIOLIN CONSPIRACY at Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. If he’s lucky, he’ll get a job at the hospital cafeteria. If he’s extra lucky, he’ll earn more than minimum wage. But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music. When he discovers that his great-great-grandfather’s beat-up old fiddle is actually a priceless Stradivarius, all his dreams suddenly seem within reach. Together, Ray and his violin take the world by storm. But on the eve of the renowned and cutthroat Tchaikovsky Competition—the Olympics of classical music—the violin is stolen, a ransom note for five million dollars left in its place. Ray will have to piece together the clues to recover his treasured Strad…before it’s too late. With the descendants of the man who once enslaved Ray’s great-great-grandfather asserting that the instrument is rightfully theirs, and with his family staking their own claim, Ray doesn’t know who he can trust—or whether he will ever see his beloved violin again. Brendan N. Slocumb was born in Yuba City, California.

Alex Harris’ OUR STRANGE NEW LAND: Narrative Movie Sets in the American South at Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

The American South has become a nexus of film production in the United States. By 2016, more major features were being shot in Georgia than in California. Commissioned by the High Museum in Atlanta as part of their Picturing the South series, Alex Harris explored cinematic representations of the South by visiting and photographing the making of over 40 independent fiction films across the region. Using a documentary approach to capture scenes that unfolded on or around the set, Harris’ images tell the story of a new South while also hinting at more universal aspects of life – the ways in which we are all actors in our own lives, creating our sets, practicing our lines, refining our characters, playing ourselves. These photographs also tell a story about our increasingly visual culture and explore the rapidly evolving world of independent filmmaking, one that is little known to audiences outside the film festival circuit.

Hewitt Pottery Pop-up Sale!

Hewitt Pottery 424 Johnny Burke Rd, Pittsboro, NC, United States

ONE DAY ONLY! A barn/showroom full of beautiful new pottery dinner plates, cereal/salad bowls and more! We've been hunkered down for so long and we've missed you! Saturday is predicted to be a delightful 77° and we are celebrating with a ONE DAY Sale! Over the winter Mark made a batch of dinner plates, side pates, cereal & serving bowls, and lovely tumblers. He glazed them with his Chandler Rock glaze, made from a granite he gathered last fall at an old kiln site near Edgefield, South Carolina, and fired them in his large gas kiln. The results are beautiful. We've been using a few of the plates and bowls in the house, and we love them. The depth of color and subtle textures of the glaze is so enchanting, while the link to Thomas Chandler and the 19th century Edgefield tradition add layers of intrigue and reflection. We can't wait to share this luminous soft blue/green tableware with you! Together with a selection of lovely pots from the last firing - pitchers, jars, tall vases, planters, slab dishes. and more - we have a barn full of pottery we know you will enjoy! There will be some bargains as well, including discounts on a few of the larger pieces. We hope you can come out on Saturday and enjoy a perfect springtime outing in the country, and a grand reunion of old friends!
