Dakin Campbell presents GOING PUBLIC at Flyleaf Books
Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NCA behind-the-scenes tour of the high-stakes world of IPOs and how a visionary band of startup executives, venture capitalists, and maverick bankers has launched a crusade to upend the traditional IPO as we know it. Going Public is a character-driven narrative centered on the last five years of unparalleled change in how technology startups sell shares to the public. Initial public offerings, or IPOs, are typically the first time retail investors can own a piece of the New Economy companies promising to rewire economic rules. Selling IPOs is also one of the most profitable businesses for Wall Street investment banks, who have spent the last 40 years protecting their profits. In an era when algorithms and software have made the financial markets more efficient, the pricing of IPOs still relies on human judgment. In 2018, executives at music-streaming service Spotify sought to upend the status quo. Led by a trim and understated CFO, Barry McCarthy, and a shy but brilliant founder, Daniel Ek, they took a wild idea and forged something new. Going Public explores how they got comfortable with the risk, and how they lobbied securities watchdogs and exchange staff to rewrite the regulations. Readers will meet executives at disruptive companies like Airbnb, DoorDash, venture capitalists, and even some bankers who seized on Spotify’s labor and used it to knock Wall Street bankers off the piles of fees they’d been stacking for so long. Going Public weaves in earlier attempts to rethink the IPO process, introducing readers to one of Silicon Valley’s earliest bankers, Bill Hambrecht, whose invention for selling shares online was embraced by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they auctioned their shares in 2004. And it examines the recent boom in blank-check companies, those Wall Street insider deals that have suddenly become the hottest […]

Adam Lucas presents TOGETHER: THE AMAZING STORY OF CAROLINA BASKETBALL’S 2021-2022 SEASON at Flyleaf Books
Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NCThe definitive book on the 2021-22 Carolina basketball team provides a behind-the-scenes look at the first year of the Hubert Davis era. When Hubert Davis was named head men's basketball coach at the University of North Carolina in April 2021, history had already been made, as Davis became the program's first Black head coach. But after two difficult seasons, it was hard to imagine how quickly a new staff, a new playing style, and a new roster blending established players with prominent transfers and talented freshmen would be able to change the story—except within the fabled Smith Center locker room and practice gyms, where photos of the New Orleans Superdome helped players and staff focus on the possible. In words and photos full of behind-the-scenes moments, this book reveals how belief in the program's rich traditions and in one another enabled the 2021-2022 Tar Heels to achieve what at times seemed impossible, writing a thrilling new chapter in the story of Carolina basketball. From Davis's remarkable work to build a new staff and roster to the ups and downs of the conference season to the amazing run through March to the pinnacle of the college game, the story takes fans through one of the most dramatic years in program history. Adam Lucas is a featured columnist at GoHeels.com, the official website of Carolina Athletics, and author of many books, including Carolina Basketball: A Century of Excellence. Steve Kirschner is senior associate athletic director for sports information and media relations at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Matt Bowers is associate director of athletic communications at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Hubert Davis is the twentieth head coach of the University of North Carolina men's basketball program.

Roberts also provides fascinating historical context, such as the influence of Black Mountain College, the birth and growth of Penland School of Crafts, and short histories of North Carolina's art museums, including Charlotte's Mint Museum, Raleigh's North Carolina Museum of Art, Winston-Salem's Reynolda House, and those flourishing at universities. Artists featured include Stephen Hayes, Mel Chin, Cristina Cordova, Beverly McIver, and Scott Avett. The result is the most comprehensive, informative, and visually rich story of contemporary art in North Carolina. Liza Roberts is a journalist and founder of Walter Magazine. She lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. Larry Wheeler led the North Carolina Museum of Art as Director and CEO for nearly 25 years, retiring in 2018. Among his many achievements was the commissioning of the international architect Thomas Phifer to design the new West Building and developing the Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park.
