Brendan Greaves presents TRUCKLOAD OF ART, with David Menconi at Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

The definitive, authorized, and first-ever biography of Terry Allen, the internationally acclaimed visual artist and iconoclastic songwriter who occupies an utterly unique position straddling the disparate, and usually distant, worlds of conceptual art and country music. "People tell me it's country music," Terry Allen has joked, "and I ask, 'Which country?'" For nearly sixty years, Allen's inimitable art has explored the borderlands of memory, crossing boundaries between disciplines and audiences by conjuring indelible stories out of the howling West Texas wind. In Truckload of Art, author Brendan Greaves exhaustively traces the influences that shaped Allen's extraordinary life, from his childhood in Lubbock, Texas, spent ringside and sidestage at the wrestling matches and concerts his father promoted, to his formative art-school years in incendiary 1960s Los Angeles, and through subsequent decades doggedly pursuing his uncompromising artistic vision. With humor and critical acumen, Greaves deftly recounts how Allen built a career and cult following with pioneering independent records like Lubbock (on everything) (1979)--widely considered an archetype of alternative country--and multiyear, multimedia bodies of richly narrative, interconnected art and theatrical works, including JUAREZ (ongoing since 1968), hailed as among the most significant statements in the history of American vernacular music and conceptual art. Drawing on hundreds of revealing interviews with Allen himself, his family members, and his many notable friends, colleagues, and collaborators--from musicians like David Byrne and Kurt Vile to artists such as Bruce Nauman and Kiki Smith--and informed by unprecedented access to the artist's home, studio, journals, and archives, Greaves offers a poetic, deeply personal portrait of arguably the most singularly multivalent storyteller of the American West. Brendan Greaves is founder and owner of the record label Paradise of Bachelors and has collaborated on numerous projects with Terry Allen, including Pedal Steal + Four Corners, for which he earned a Grammy […]

Margot Livesey presents THE ROAD FROM BELHAVEN, with Jill McCorkle at Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy, a novel about a young woman whose gift of second sight complicates her coming of age in late-nineteenth-century Scotland “Bewitching and seductive.” —Rebecca Makkai, author of I Have Some Questions for You “A treasure: a writer who understands the magic and mysteries of the human soul." —Chris Bohjalian, author of Hour of the Witch “This book is a cold, clear, perfect lake." —Lauren Groff, author of The Vaster Wilds Growing up in the care of her grandparents on Belhaven Farm, Lizzie Craig discovers as a small child that she can see into the future. But her gift is selective—she doesn’t, for instance, see that she has an older sister who will come to join the family. As her “pictures” foretell various incidents and accidents, she begins to realize a painful truth: she may glimpse the future, but she can seldom change it. Nor can Lizzie change the feelings that come when a young man named Louis, visiting Belhaven for the harvest, begins to court her. Why have the adults around her not revealed that the touch of a hand can change everything? After following Louis to Glasgow, though, she learns the limits of his devotion. Faced with a seemingly impossible choice, she makes a terrible mistake. But her second sight may allow her a second chance. Luminous and transporting, The Road from Belhaven once again displays “the marvelous control of a writer who conjures equally well the tangible, sensory world . . . and the mysteries, stranger and wilder, that flicker at the border of that world.” —The Boston Globe Margot Livesey was born and grew up on the edge of the Scottish Highlands. She is the author of a collection of stories and nine other novels, […]

Pianist Robert Buxton brings music from the past to life today as a performer and public speaker. He offers a unique lecture-recital combination to retirement communities, association meetings, private events, schools, and universities. Robert has been on the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at East Carolina University. He studied under Vladimir Viardo at the University of North Texas (M.M. and D.M.A. degrees) and with Solomon Mikowsky at the Manhattan School of Music (B.M. degree). His doctoral dissertation involved the philosophy of Henri Bergson as a mode of interpreting nostalgia in the piano music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, and he continues to write about music in a personal idiom. Robert is passionate about less well-known repertoire of all eras and new music, particularly U.S. composers William Grant Still, Charles Ives, Florence Price, and Roy Harris. He often includes southern gospel improvisations at concerts. Also a composer and arranger, he frequently performs his own transcriptions of Mahalia Jackson’s gospel recordings, an elegiac piano sonata, “Freedom Summer—Mississippi 1964,” short pieces based on Jack Kerouac’s Haikus, free arrangements of medieval […]
