Sage Rountree presents THE ATHLETE’S GUIDE TO RECOVERY and THE ART OF YOGA SEQUENCING at Flyleaf Books
Sage Rountree presents THE ATHLETE’S GUIDE TO RECOVERY and THE ART OF YOGA SEQUENCING at Flyleaf Books
Sage Rountree will present her new books: the revised edition of The Athlete’s Guide to Recovery, 2nd ed and The Art of Yoga Sequencing. The Athlete’s Guide to Recovery is an invaluable guide to help athletes maximize training gains by making the most of their recovery time. Recovery—physical and mental—is a red-hot topic, and the worlds of sports, technology, and commerce have all taken note. But which practices and devices really make a difference in recovery, and which should be avoided? What will truly maximize performance? Emphasizing the fundamentals of sleep, nutrition, and stress management, this second edition features up-to-date research that has emerged to support the importance of these basic recovery strategies and includes a much-needed, careful look at new devices on the market. Whether self-coached, coached, or team-sport athletes, The Athlete’s Guide to Recovery provides readers with an evidence-based approach to finding the right balance between stress and rest. The Art of Yoga Sequencing is an inclusive guide for yoga teachers and practitioners to create balanced movement sequences and well-rounded classes for all students. Rountree’s approach to teaching grows from a simple truth: bodies feel better when they move in many different ways and directions. And when they feel better, they work to make the world a freer, more liberated place. But in a social-media fueled yoga scene that over-celebrates acrobatic, unrealistic poses, it’s easy for even the most experienced instructor to lose touch with their students. The fix is clear: Real students need simple lessons taught clearly. Yoga teacher, trainer, and bestselling author Sage Rountree draws on years of expert experience to offer a fresh, contemporary approach to yoga sequencing and mindful movement that reflects the diversity and meets the needs of the modern yogi. Sage Rountree, PhD, is the preeminent authority in yoga for athletes, a […]

Brendan Greaves presents TRUCKLOAD OF ART, with David Menconi at Flyleaf Books
Brendan Greaves presents TRUCKLOAD OF ART, with David Menconi at Flyleaf Books
The definitive, authorized, and first-ever biography of Terry Allen, the internationally acclaimed visual artist and iconoclastic songwriter who occupies an utterly unique position straddling the disparate, and usually distant, worlds of conceptual art and country music. "People tell me it's country music," Terry Allen has joked, "and I ask, 'Which country?'" For nearly sixty years, Allen's inimitable art has explored the borderlands of memory, crossing boundaries between disciplines and audiences by conjuring indelible stories out of the howling West Texas wind. In Truckload of Art, author Brendan Greaves exhaustively traces the influences that shaped Allen's extraordinary life, from his childhood in Lubbock, Texas, spent ringside and sidestage at the wrestling matches and concerts his father promoted, to his formative art-school years in incendiary 1960s Los Angeles, and through subsequent decades doggedly pursuing his uncompromising artistic vision. With humor and critical acumen, Greaves deftly recounts how Allen built a career and cult following with pioneering independent records like Lubbock (on everything) (1979)--widely considered an archetype of alternative country--and multiyear, multimedia bodies of richly narrative, interconnected art and theatrical works, including JUAREZ (ongoing since 1968), hailed as among the most significant statements in the history of American vernacular music and conceptual art. Drawing on hundreds of revealing interviews with Allen himself, his family members, and his many notable friends, colleagues, and collaborators--from musicians like David Byrne and Kurt Vile to artists such as Bruce Nauman and Kiki Smith--and informed by unprecedented access to the artist's home, studio, journals, and archives, Greaves offers a poetic, deeply personal portrait of arguably the most singularly multivalent storyteller of the American West. Brendan Greaves is founder and owner of the record label Paradise of Bachelors and has collaborated on numerous projects with Terry Allen, including Pedal Steal + Four Corners, for which he earned a Grammy […]

Margot Livesey presents THE ROAD FROM BELHAVEN, with Jill McCorkle at Flyleaf Books
Margot Livesey presents THE ROAD FROM BELHAVEN, with Jill McCorkle at Flyleaf Books
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy, a novel about a young woman whose gift of second sight complicates her coming of age in late-nineteenth-century Scotland “Bewitching and seductive.” —Rebecca Makkai, author of I Have Some Questions for You “A treasure: a writer who understands the magic and mysteries of the human soul." —Chris Bohjalian, author of Hour of the Witch “This book is a cold, clear, perfect lake." —Lauren Groff, author of The Vaster Wilds Growing up in the care of her grandparents on Belhaven Farm, Lizzie Craig discovers as a small child that she can see into the future. But her gift is selective—she doesn’t, for instance, see that she has an older sister who will come to join the family. As her “pictures” foretell various incidents and accidents, she begins to realize a painful truth: she may glimpse the future, but she can seldom change it. Nor can Lizzie change the feelings that come when a young man named Louis, visiting Belhaven for the harvest, begins to court her. Why have the adults around her not revealed that the touch of a hand can change everything? After following Louis to Glasgow, though, she learns the limits of his devotion. Faced with a seemingly impossible choice, she makes a terrible mistake. But her second sight may allow her a second chance. Luminous and transporting, The Road from Belhaven once again displays “the marvelous control of a writer who conjures equally well the tangible, sensory world . . . and the mysteries, stranger and wilder, that flicker at the border of that world.” —The Boston Globe Margot Livesey was born and grew up on the edge of the Scottish Highlands. She is the author of a collection of stories and nine other novels, […]

He offers a unique lecture-recital combination to retirement communities, association meetings, private events, schools, and universities. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed in New York (Symphony Space, the YIVO institute, Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the Spanish Consulate, and Steinway Hall), Europe (Scuola di Musica in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, Italy, the Maison Erard in Amsterdam) and in Japan, (Sakata, Kyoto, and Tokyo). He studied under Vladimir Viardo at the University of North Texas (M.M. and D.M.A. degrees) and with Solomon Mikowsky at the Manhattan School of Music (B.M. degree). His doctoral dissertation involved the philosophy of Henri Bergson as a mode of interpreting nostalgia in the piano music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, and he continues to write about music in a personal idiom. Robert is passionate about less well-known repertoire of all eras and new music, particularly U.S. composers William Grant Still, Charles Ives, Florence Price, and Roy Harris. He often includes southern gospel improvisations at concerts. Also a composer and arranger, he frequently performs his own transcriptions of Mahalia Jackson’s gospel recordings, an elegiac piano sonata, “Freedom Summer—Mississippi 1964,” short pieces based on Jack Kerouac’s Haikus, free arrangements of medieval […]

Anna Gazmarian and Maddie Norris presents DEVOUT: A MEMOIR OF DOUBT and THE WET WOUNDat Flyleaf Books
Anna Gazmarian and Maddie Norris presents DEVOUT: A MEMOIR OF DOUBT and THE WET WOUNDat Flyleaf Books
In her revelatory memoir Devout: A Memoir of Doubt, Anna Gazmarian seeks to bridge the gap between science and spirituality by telling the story of how her Evangelical upbringing in North Carolina provided an inadequate framework to understand the mental health diagnosis she received, and the work she had to do to find proper medical treatment while also maintaining her faith. When Anna is diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2011, she is faced with a conundrum: while the diagnosis provides clarity about her manic and depressive episodes, growing up in an Evangelical community means that her diagnosis is regarded as an affliction of the spirit rather than a medical condition. Over ten years, we follow Anna on her journey to re-frame her understanding of mental health to expand the limits of what her religious faith can offer The Wet Wound is Maddie Norris's debut essay collection, inspired by the grief she experienced in the wake of her father's death from cancer when she was seventeen. Norris uses a medical lens to examine the anguish that followed and likens mourning to wound care. These linked essays examine grief from different angles, resulting in a multilayered exploration of why, contrary to popular belief, keeping wounds open is the best way to care for them physically and emotionally. Norris approaches the narrative through various topics--the investigation of body preservation, the history of skin grafts, and a deep dive into physical pain--all of them related to how she carries this fundamental loss. By centering on the importance of mourning (a long-term practice frowned upon in Western culture), the essays unsettle conventional wisdom as the text pushes against the stereotypical notion of "letting go" and "moving on." The Wet Wound: An Elegy in Essays thus unpacks the question: What happens when, instead of following steps […]
