Adam Rosenblatt presents CEMETERY CITIZENS, with Debra Taylor Gonzalez-Garcia, at Flyleaf Books
Adam Rosenblatt presents CEMETERY CITIZENS, with Debra Taylor Gonzalez-Garcia, at Flyleaf Books
Join us for a conversation between Rosenblatt and Debra Taylor Gonzalez-Garcia, president of the local organization Friends of Geer Cemetery. In association with the Durham Black Burial Grounds Collaboratory. Across the United States, groups of grassroots volunteers gather in overgrown, systemically neglected cemeteries. As they rake, clean headstones, and research silenced histories, they offer care to individuals who were denied basic rights and forms of belonging in life and in death. Cemetery Citizens is the first book-length study of this emerging form of social justice work. It focuses on how racial disparities shape the fates of the dead, and asks what kinds of repair are still possible. Drawing on interviews, activist anthropology, poems, and drawings, Adam Rosenblatt takes us to gravesite reclamation efforts in three prominent American cities. Cemetery Citizens dives into the ethical quandaries and practical complexities of cemetery reclamation, showing how volunteers build community across social boundaries, craft new ideas about citizenship and ancestry, and expose injustices that would otherwise be suppressed. Ultimately, Rosenblatt argues that an ethic of reclamation must honor the presence of the dead--treating them as fellow cemetery citizens who share our histories, landscapes, and need for care. Adam Rosenblatt is Associate Professor of the Practice in International Comparative Studies and Cultural Anthropology at Duke University and the author of Digging for the Disappeared: Forensic Science After Atrocity (2015) and Cemetery Citizens: Reclaiming Buried Pasts and Working for Justice in American Burial Grounds (2024). He is a co-founder of the Durham Black Burial Grounds Collaboratory and board member of the Friends of Geer Cemetery. He is also a comics creator and recent graduate of the year-long intensive program at the Sequential Artists Workshop, currently conducting interviews of independent comics creators in Durham and the Triangle. Debra Taylor Gonzalez-Garcia is a passionate genealogist. She has worked […]

Julie Kliegman presents MIND GAME, with Lindsay Gibbs at Flyleaf Books
Julie Kliegman presents MIND GAME, with Lindsay Gibbs at Flyleaf Books
A deep look into how even the best athletes struggle with and persevere through mental illness. In growing numbers, athletes are speaking up about their struggles with mental illness—including high-profile stars such as Michael Phelps, Kevin Love, Simone Biles, and Naomi Osaka. More disclosures are surely on the way, as athletes recognize that their openness can help others and inspire those around them. In Mind Game: An Inside Look at the Mental Health Playbook of Elite Athletes, Julie Kliegman offers insight into how elite athletes navigate mental performance and mental illness—and what non-athletes can learn from them. She explores the recent mental health movement in sports, the history and practice of sport psychology, the stereotypes and stigmas that lead athletes to keep their troubles to themselves, and the ways in which injury and retirement can throw wrenches in their mental states. Kliegman also examines the impacts of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, substance use, and more, with a keen eye toward moving forward with acceptance, progress, and problem-solving. Featuring insightful interviews with Olympians Chloe Kim, McKayla Maroney, and Adam Rippon, NBA players Kevin Love and DeMar DeRozan, former U.S. Open tennis champ Bianca Andreescu, and many other athletes and experts, Mind Game breaks down the ongoing, heartening movement of athletes across sports coming forward to get the care they need and deserve—and to help others feel safe opening up about their struggles, as well. Julie Kliegman is a writer and editor in Queens, New York. They are the author of Mind Game: An Inside Look at the Mental Health Playbook of Elite Athletes. Their work has appeared in outlets including Sports Illustrated, The Washington Post, Bookforum, Slate, The Ringer, BuzzFeed News, Vulture, The Verge, and Washington Monthly. Kliegman's second book, Finding Renée, a biography of transgender tennis player Renée Richards, is […]
