September 28/29- ASNC Fundraising Weekend Huck is excited to be hosting another fundraising weekend for the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC). During this weekend, a portion of admissions collected will be donated to the Autism Society. We are also offering families of the Autism Society a discounted admission. We will have some designated “quiet areas” in the farmyard and down the hill. This weekend is open to everyone so please come out and enjoy a great day at Huckleberry Trail Farm. October 5/6 – Huck’s Feed the Hungry Weekend Sponsored by Piggly Wiggly. All who come to the farm and bring a can of food will be given $1.00 off* the admission price to the farm. (“Sandy”) Darity Jr. is the Samuel DuBois Cook Professor of Public Policy, African and African American Studies, and Economics and the director of the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Duke University. He has served as chair of the Department of African and African American Studies and was the founding director of the Research Network on Racial and Ethnic Inequality at Duke.

Town of Pittsboro Announces Fourth Offering of PBO-101 Academy; Registration Open Until October 18th Pittsboro, NC - The Town of Pittsboro is proud to announce the next offering of our Citizen's Academy, known as "PBO 101." PBO 101 is a six-week course designed to offer participants an educational and interactive learning experience on the workings of the Town government. The course, previously seven weeks in duration, has been condensed and reworked as we no longer have a session focused on water and wastewater utilities. The curriculum will cover current Town programs, services, and procedures and offer an in-depth look at several Town departments, including Administration/Finance, Police, Planning/Downtown, Parks and Recreation, Engineering, Public Works, Communications & Emergency Management, and the Governing Board. To ensure that participants have the chance to discuss and communicate with Town staff and leaders and participate in the practical exercises, the class size is limited to 12 participants. Senior Town staff will lead each session at the Town Offices at Main Street Station (287 East St) from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The final session will consist of dinner and conversation in small groups with the Town's Commissioners. The time and location of the final session will be communicated to participants during the academy. Each participant will take home a one-gallon batch of mead to finish at home. Attendees will learn the basics of mead making. You will be taken step by step through the process of making a “cyser” (honey and apple). You will learn how to properly sanitize and what equipment is needed to make a great homemade mead! Bland & Ann Simpson present CLOVER GARDEN at Flyleaf Books
Through his long, celebrated writing career, Bland Simpson has earned a reputation as the bard of North Carolina's coasts and sound country. Here, for the first time, he trains his attention on Clover Garden, the Piedmont community where he has lived for some fifty years. Flyleaf will offer seating for up to 70 in-person guests, with priority access given to folks who purchase the book. Please indicate in the comments if you’d like 1-2 seats held for you at the event! A signing line will follow the talk. Bland Simpson is Kenan Distinguished Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also pianist for the Red Clay Ramblers, the Tony Award-winning string band, and has collaborated on such musicals as Diamond Studs, Fool Moon, Kudzu, and King Mackerel & The Blues Are Running. In 2005 he was the Fine Arts recipient of the North Carolina Award, the state's highest civilian honor. Ann Cary Simpson, photographer, served for thirty years at national and North Carolina environmental organizations and as associate dean for development at UNC's School of Government, for which she received the Chancellor's Award. She is now a senior associate with moss + ross consulting.

In this intermediate class, we’ll talk about various additives and when to use or not use them. You will learn about various methods to oak meads and the difference between French and American oak and sample meads aged with chips from each of these different types. You will learn about different acids and when acid additions may be necessary. Class includes mead tasting with various oak, tannin, and additives. $50 single, $75 two people Class takes place on Nov 02 from 10 am - 1 pm at the meadery in Pittsboro. All class participants MUST be over 21! No exceptions. Must sign up by Oct 30. IMPORTANT: This is an intermediate class and attendees must have a basic understanding of home mead making processes, equipment, and terms and have made a few home mead batches.
