Hillsboro Street businesses that opened Sunday, July 4th took advantage of the visitors to the PBA Summer Fest event in Pittsboro on Salisbury and Hanks Streets. Music from the Dowdy Boys (a set of 9 songs!) and 8-Track Minds (30! songs) was wonderful and got a lot of the attendees up, out of their chairs, and dancing! For the kids, there was a water slide, dunking booth, corn hole, other games and balloon animals! There were a total of 26 vendor booths, including 10 food/drink/treats vendors. I spoke with a half dozen vendors at the end of the event and they were very pleased with the turn out and this opportunity to connect with the visitors and turn them into customers. The blueberry fruit pie was the pie contest winner! If you missed participating, you missed a great time and wonderful event.

Handcrafted items are one of a kind, made for YOU, personalized, and convey a special meaning to those receiving them. You’ll find a few stock items at Ric’s Leather, but largely I work on a custom basis. Even a stock design can and should be personalized! Let me make that special leather item for you, a friend or a loved one. Ric’s Leather Hours By appointment Email Email Ric’s Leather Phone 918-704-7900 A note from a post on the Pittsboro Business Association’s FB page that ran on June 14, 2020: A quick note to introduce myself. I’m Ric Harber, the “Ric” of Ric’s Leather & Engraving. My wife and I moved to Chatham County in January of this year. I’m retired from the federal government where I worked as an economist. When I retired, I turned my hobby into a business in Tulsa, Oklahoma. With the move here, I brought my leather-working tools and laser engraver with me. While I don’t have a storefront, I am working and would love to be of service. Laser engravers allow me to engrave or mark a wide variety of substrates which makes them fantastic for personalizing products or promotional materials. For example, any of the beverage cups that keep your drinks warm or cold for extended periods make an excellent canvas for a name or logo. Custom leatherwork means tell me what you want and I can probably make it for you. Belts, wallets, purses, koozies, coffee cup sleeves, plague masks, and even toilet seat toppers. So please check out my work at my website www.ricsleather.com or on Ric’s Leather & Engraving. I look forward to seeing folks at “First Sunday” once it is allowed to happen. Stay safe and stay happy. Continue readingHuckleberry Trail Farm
What’s in a name? Where did the name of our farm come from? Well, it didn’t come from the huckleberries growing wild on the land. Huckleberries don’t do well in the South (we know because we’ve researched it thinking maybe we should have some growing on the farm if we were going to put them in our name). Our name comes from what comes to mind when most people hear the word huckleberry-Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. It was a favorite bedtime reading book of our son, Robert, growing up. Between the story of Tom and Huck’s adventures were many lessons to be discussed and learned. We also decided to pay homage to the old wagon trail running along the back of our property. And that is how Huckleberry Trail Farm was born….. huckleberrytrailfarm.com Location 143 Pleasant Hill Church Road Siler City, NC 27344 Hours: In 2019, the farm was open to the public every weekend beginning September 28 1 through Sunday, October 27, with a special home schooler day on October 31. The pandemic changed things in 2020 and 2021. Look for a similar schedule in 2022. Our regular hours are: Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm (last admission is 5:00, last hay ride is 5:30) Sundays 1 pm to 6 pm (last admission is 5:00, last hay ride is 5:30) The farm is available for special events by arrangement. Continue readingMark Hewitt Pottery
Pittsboro’s W.M. Hewitt Pottery Studio is famous for its functional, wood-fired pottery that uses local North Carolina stoneware clays. Mark Hewitt was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England. He is the son and grandson of directors of Spode, the fine china manufacturers. As a student at Bristol University in the early 1970’s, Mark read Bernard Leach’s “A Potter’s Book” and decided to become a studio potter. This led to a three-year apprenticeship with Michael Cardew, and later another with Todd Piker in Connecticut, where Mark met his wife, Carol. In 1983 they moved to Pittsboro and set up their pottery. Mark built a very large wood kiln and began making the distinctive functional pots, specializing in large planters and jars, along with finely made smaller items. He uses local clays and blends different North Carolinian folk traditions together into a contemporary style. His work has been featured in Smithsonian magazine and on the cover of American Craft magazine. Mark has written extensively in the ceramic press and has exhibited in London, New York and Tokyo, as well as throughout the US. He is well-represented in museum and private collections. www.hewittpottery.com Location 424 Johnny Burke Rd.
